Safe deposit box contents: Non-saleable, 1990-[ongoing]

Contents of safe deposit boxes remitted to the State Treasurer under Ch. 177.16, Wis. Stats. as "abandoned" when the rent has remained unpaid for a period of 5 years. Current policy provides that boxes are inventoried upon receipt; saleable items (coins, jewelry, stamps, stock, etc.) are segregated for safekeeping and eventual sale. Section 177.22, Wis. Stats. provides that "saleable" property be sold at public auction within 3 years of receipt. Non-saleable items (correspondence, pictures, birth certificates, cancelled checks, etc.) are held in separate safekeeping envelopes for owner.
